SUSE bids farewell to Docker

The Kubic project from SUSE now uses the container runtime CRI-O by default. This is the software component that creates a container environment from an image. Since the specification of the corresponding interface by the Open Container Initiative, other runtime environments implementing the Container Runtime Interface have evolved. That includes CRI-O, which was developed by Red Hat and SUSE. Originally CRI-O was devised for the Kubernetes orchestration platform but is now also usable with frontends like Podman similar to Docker.

Among the reasons for using CRI-O mentioned by SUSE is that it is a "really open" platform, it has less overhead and is easier to secure. Docker will be available as an additional option and can also be used parallel to Podman / CRI-O - albeit not with Kubernetes.
