Amazon has announced the the OpenSearch project, a community-driven, open source fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana. The project includes OpenSearch (derived from Elasticsearch 7.10.2) and OpenSearch Dashboards (derived from Kibana 7.10.2).
The fork is presumably a reaction to Elastic's announcment to discontinue the open source development of ElasticSearch which in turn was a reaction to service providers such as AWS using the ElasticSearch open source product as the foundation of commercial services.
AWS claims to pursue "a true open source path and community-driven approach" in developing OpenSearch and has published "permissive usage guidelines for the OpenSearch trademark", so other members of the future OpenSearch community can promote their offerings.
According to the announcement organizations such as Red Hat, SAP, Capital One and Logz.io have joined the OpenSearch effort.
