Kata containers are available as a version 1.0. Kata containers are a project of the OpenStack Foundation which combines container technology with VMs for more security, using the existing Intel Clear container and Hyper.sh projects. The project was presented at the end of 2017, and now, in time for the OpenStack Summit, version 1.0 is available.

According to the developers, Kata 1.0 is compatible with Docker Community Edition (CE) 18.03.1. Regarding the Kubernetes Orchestration software, Kata is compatible with CRI-O 1.10 commit 393429 or CRI containerd 1.0.0. The current Kata releases also complies with the OCI Runtime Specification v1.0.0-rc5 .

Despite the good compatibility with existing interfaces, Kata 1.0 has some limitations, some of which are inherent in the principle of operation, because a VM does not allow certain operations, but some restrictions should be resolved in future releases. All details are listed in the document "Limitations".

The Kata source code is available on the GitHub project release page.
